Review on Tuesday July 30th

Okay, I admitted that I spent some time working out, watching Korean drama, and using my phone. But it was too tired to do something related to study! So, I just enjoyed the time in the cafe a while and exercised a little as usual. What am I writing here?

Today, there was two times of speaking and interactive communication. There were some topics we should discuss and some of them were interesting. Especially about racism in Korea. A lot of people don't admit it, but there is pretty much strong racism in Korea. Even I am little prejudiced against some group of people. Other teachers seemed not to know this strong racism in Korea. However, I am sure every person in Korea have experienced it at least at once except Korean ourselves.

Pedagogical English Instruction. We talked about contextualized class for a while. Can I decorate my classroom as I want? Is it okay to put something on the wall? I'm not still sure. My classroom is not only my one but also other English teachers' and homeroom teacher's of the room.

However, I can start little things.

He gave us several trust building activity. Those were fun even though Eye-contact activity was a little too much for people... It was embarrassing to have eye contact even only 15 seconds and I did it with Denis with 60 seconds!!!!!

Teaching culture in the classroom. Okay. I am not a creative person. I tried, but those were so difficult questions. Without teacher's hints, we couldn't figure out half of them. The concept of  critical thinking is not that difficult but applying it was difficult. It Was.

Oops, it is already past midnight!

Being tired

Being tired, I can't focus on my work and keep using my phone like right now writing this. People around me are getting noisier. I should leave soon.
Should I make hyphothesis sentences only with the form of comparative? Ah....... It is hard to get the notion of it. Summary is even worse.
Time for running!

Review on Monday, July 29th: angry at the blog

I can't believe that there are 4 months left in this year! Time flies no matter when we have fun or not. Is that the proof that I am getting older to feel time goes too fast?

M.M.I.V.I.
First I saw this, it looked so strange. What is it? It says: MONDAY MORNING IS VERY IMPORTANT.

That's right. Every beginning is go important. However, we always seem more tired on Monday than any other days. As a teacher, we should refresh our classes at the very beginning. When the teacher is happy, the students are happy, too. So, 'small talk rotation lines' was useful for breaking being tired mood. It is useful to find out what my friends did last weekend. The strong point of this is 1. this could be active by everyone standing  2. through repetition, students may grow their fluency and correct their errors by themselves. However, I think latter one could be also weak point of this activity, because I don't like to repeat something again and again.

Writing! I am really worried about my writing ability. First of all, there is few chance to write in English. Second, no matter how I tried hard, my writing looked strange and needed lots of correction from foreign teachers. Although I studied English writing a while for the test to be a teacher, it is still difficult to write something in English. Anyway, it is included in the curriculum, I should do my best to learn this. I hope I can learn lots of forms for writing and practice a lot. (But NO lots of homework... please.)

While I was learning google+ and blog, I was confused with lots of menus those have. Whenever I try something new, it takes time to get used to it. I am a slow learner.

HOW CAN I CATEGORIZE MY WRITINGS!!!! It is so easy to sort posts with naver blog or cyworld blog but it is not here! I should find out how to sort out my posts not using tags.

In the afternoon, our generous Bob teacher gave us lots of lots of lots stuff that we can not only use for teaching but also learning ourselves. It was so precious and much material, so that nobody could possible see all the material. Thank you, Mr. Schwab! And sorry for a little dozing during the class. Nevertheless, it was good time to think about my classes and how to make them communicative with context.

Now, teachers start to give us HOMEWORK. I should manage my time more properly.

Humphrey Bogart

  • Today, Denis was shocked that we didn't know him. How come I know him who died before even my mom was born?!?

Only movie I've heard about is Casablanca. I ONLY HEARD the title! :P

    Humphrey Bogart
    Actor
  • Humphrey DeForest Bogart was an American actor and is widely regarded as an American cultural icon. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Bogart as the greatest male star in the history of American cinema. Wikipedia
  • How to categorize my posts?

It is tricky to use the google blog.

I want to categorize my posts based on the purposes or characteristics of the writings.

Is there any ways to do that except for using tags?

Homework: Teaching Culture in the English Classroom(CU)

    till this Thursday.

    CLASS HOMEWORK

    Your homework is to:
    1. read the article “The Art of Failure”
    2. write an article summary
    3. write a thesis that describes the writer’s main idea
    4. write 2 to 4 hypotheses from the article
    5. write 8 – 10 comprehension questions which will be used in pair work to help your partners understand the main ideas of the story. Please do not write tricky, picky grammar questions. We’re all about main ideas in this class, not minutia.

I should've done this during the weekend... but it was too hot!!! X(

A late review on Friday, July, 26th.

It was a ordinary day as usual. We still have new subjects, so it was like a honeymoon(Noel said).

Everything went well. Dr.Schwab (can I call him Bob?) looks like a generous and considerate grandfather(If it is rude, I'm really sorry, and I'll delete this sentence.) but at the same time he seems to give us a lot of work to do and think.

Today, Noel talked little faster and I had hard time following him a little. I should practice English listening more. :(
We talked about Teaching English Through English a little. It..... I don't know. It is very controversial issue in Korea and I'm so confused. It conflicts directly what I think. However, I am a students now and should be flexible more.

At a break, Jeff gave me a fright. I was dozing putting my head on my arms. Suddenly I heard someone call my name and literally got up! He liked my work on my blog. I was so surprised that he checked my blog and glad that he liked it. At the same time, I was a little embarrassed that I was the only one who used the blog so actively.

I am a night owl. I should change my life style and should be an early bird. It is not easy. Today(Sunday, July, 28th) was too hot to do anything. I should go out early....

    Homeroom teacher

This is a common homeroom teacher's daily life in middle(junior high) school in Korea.

    morning
    8.25.
    arrive at school.

    8.30.
go to the homeroom class and have students in homeroom class do self-study for a while.
before 8.50. give Ss announcements from school and check the role. If there is any absent, call the parents.

    9.00.
start the work as a subject teacher. As a subject teacher, you usually have five or six classes to teach. In other words, you should take care of Ss' score about 140~200 students in a year besides your homeroom class Ss.
Between classes, you can have students who need your help in your homeroom class. Ss can come to you for any reason. Someone wants to go home early for being sick, someone fights, someone loses their belongings, etc.

    Lunch time.
If you are lucky, you can have lunch with other teachers. However, when something bad thing happens to your homeroom Ss, you should go to the Ss right after you hear the news.
If  you are not lucky; your school doesn't have a cafeteria for Ss, that means you should watch every student get their meal on the plate in the homeroom class. If you don't, someone must not get their meal.

    afternoon.
work as a subject teacher and a homeroom teacher too. very similar as you do in the morning.

    after finishing all period
you should go to your homeroom class and watch students clean the classroom and other places distributed to your class. If not, some weak Ss will do all work.

    Finally,
you check students attendance for the last time and give some direction if you need. and let them go.
From this, your counseling with Ss starts or you should do your paper work which you couldn't finish.
These would take your time so much so that you could leave after 5 or 6 at most.
You can prepare your class usually between classes or after all paper work.
If there is serious fight/arguments or bullying among Ss, you may get calls from angry parents even after 9 or 10 p.m.

    when you don't have class
you should handle your paper work. Usually it is much more important than your class. If you didn't finish in time, you can bother other teachers for your incompetence. You may get scolded by your head teachers.

The concept of homeroom teacher may not be easy for foreign teachers to understand. Even though I explain some, it seems that most of them still look confused.

    TLS - Week#1 Assignment

    TLS - Overview & References

    Week#1 Assignment:
Write a short blog post (about 1 paragraph) about our Week#1 'acquaintance jigsaw' TLS activity. What did you think as a participant?  How could you adapt the structure of this activity to your teaching context

Acquaintance jigsaw was fun and interesting. Although I sit with other 11 teachers and it was my fourth day of the program, I didn't have a chance to get to know each other so much. I know some of them: names, or their faces... etc. However, it is a little hard to make chance to talk with other teachers about myself or them. So, this is a good activity for knowing each other. Giving some questions in advance, I think, it keeps students asking questions and make the activity more fun and busy. If I didn't have any example questions, I must be very busy improvising some questions which could have resulted in less communication. Moreover, by mixing people two times, it gives students some physical activity which would make them meet new people and keep them awake.
My participants were so nice and willing to talk about themselves. They talked in so active and fun way, then I could enjoy the jigsaw more. It was shame that there was time limit. I totally forgot about it.
I want to use this activity in my first or second class of the year. It could make some ice-breaking time for students and they can get to know each other with simple example questions. If they have high level of English, they can make further questions, but if they are not good at English, at least I ask students to use some English word that could describe them. Some of the questions could be rather private for students to say, but with simple and light questions should give them time for being friends.

    Finding a back door

I tried to find a back door of this university and found it.
At first, it didn't look like a back door. Other teachers and I thought it is just a sort of doghole, I mean, a small gate students use besides the main gate. However, it Is a back gate. Ah... I thought I may use the back gate to go to the bus stop near there so I could avoid the crowds. Well, I give up. I definitely get lost there.

Today I take LS, CU, CE and PE. Every subject was interesting. Also, every teacher was so humorous. Especially Noel was so fun. He is... I can't find exact expression but he was so distinctive? When he changed  from his evil self and good self, it was so funny but a little scared. :) I hope he shouldn't bring out his evil side to me. hahaha.

Thesis, hypothesis, contextual learning. Well.... It must be the long journey. Some of them I am sure I studied when I prepared the test, but I could only the terms not concepts exactly. It was so frustrating.

I should write this earlier, but today is the day for my now favorite drama:  너의 목소리가 들려. I love the drama. But the drama took my time for sleep a little.... it is my fault.

    Try uploading a picture.

This is my class room and I am trying uploading a picture here.
Today, there were several new subjects again, and I hope I can do my best to every subjects.

The thing I like most is, I am NOT that bad at English compared to other teachers.

Well.... is it only my thought?

    This is the first start.

I now try making a new blog here as a part of TTP program.

I hope I can keep this for a long time. :)
