Reading and Fluency Activities.
http://extensivereadingrockstar.blogspot.kr/2012/09/the-third-week.html
Check Noel's post and watch the movie clip if there is time.
We watched Dr.Richard Day's instruction about extensive reading a little. His lecture was fun. I should watch it on weekend, because as you know, I am a fan of extensive reading.
Reading should be interactive process. It couldn't be passive. A reader uses their knowledge/scheme to understand text and build their own meaning. For example, when we think about 'walk', although we think about same behavior, the speed would be different based on the place in which a person lives. Walking in the city and walking in the country can't be same.
Reading is fun, magic. I agree with this. I like to read books. Whenever I read a book which is interesting, I forget to check the time. 4 years ago, I saw the cover of 'Time Traveler's Wife' in the bookstore. I was curious. I started to read the book and soon I found out I spent 2 hour reading the book standing there. For two hours, I just read the book without thinking anything. I happens sometimes. That's why I stay awake whole night reading some books on the weekend. I like stories too much. Someone calls this kind of experience "flow"(doing something and lose track such as what time it is). It is shame that I experience flow usually while reading novels. If I did while I study, I could be a doctor at this age.
Also, I try reading books in English, because I know it is effective way to improve my English. It is effective for Korean learning, too. It is interesting that what I have done is just reading. However, it gives me lots of vocabulary and some writing skills. "Reading a lot makes a good writer" is true in some degree.(I can't say I am a good writer. lol)
To make reading fun and magic, readers should choose the book by themselves. Also, If you don't like the book, just throw away and choose other books. You don't have to be completionist. (Well, this is a good excuse for me to buy another book often.)

We can learn to read by reading.
(Okay. now, how can I apply this to my students? I should try next year)

When we do extensive reading, incidental learning happens.
We take vocab, writing skills, lowering affective filter, motivation increase and positive attitude.

When we learn a language, Krashen(?) said 'i+1' input is important. It is a good theory. The problem is, how do we measure 'I'?
And extensive reading must be easy. if something is difficult, can we really enjoy reading?
Easy build
Speed build
fluency Build
understanding.

Students may read some difficult thing if the topic is really interesting like sexual or violent...

I think I am very tolerant to ambiguity. This is a kind of learning style. I know my learning style a little. I am tolerant to ambiguity and field dependent. Also, I like to learn by reading and listening rather than speaking or writing. Those are the ways express myself. But I know writing what I've learned or making mindmap is really helpful to organize my knowledge.

Anyway, extensive reading works well for me because I don't think I should understand everything. That's why I can read Anne series without dictionary, not because I understand words incidentally.

Oops, it is too long. What am I doing now?

US Education System&Overseas Preperation
Jeff gave us some paper. I know Jeff hate killing trees but today, the letters in the paper so... small. haha. I don't know why, but I prefer reading text on the PAPER not on the screen. It hurts my eyes. Ebookreader is good thinking about computer screen. I love kindle or crema(Koean ebookreader). I read some regulation which students in high school where I may go should follow and......... it was little scary. Why does the rule mention 'gang'? Does that mean there is gang in California? I didn't expect to see any rules mentioning clothing showing membership of gang. ha.... The USA could be scary country in some aspect.

He wanted us to read this and do jigsaw tomorrow. another homework...

Writing for Communication.
Although Denis once made us sleep(when he guided how to write free writing, most of us fell asleep. lol), I like his writing class. Jeff taught me make this blog, and Denis encouraged me to write something not worrying about mistakes. So, I make many many many mistakes, and write like this. Why? I like to keep a diary.
We try wring a paragraph using T/F S R I C. I am writing about stress as I take this course. There is much homework! -_- kkkkkk

Even Jeff gave us homework...
Well, it is good. It makes me read something. Without the homework, I plan to read but I will end up failing to read as usual.

Time to go homework.
(Although I am writing this August 9, 2:27am)

Review on Tuesday August 6th.

Today is Noel's day. There are two times of Speaking and Interactive Communication, but Brad has gone for work for a while. So, Noel took the classes this week.

As always, he was fun. We talked about food first. Korean has several vocabulary for rice, because it is our stable food. It reminded me of Inuit which has many words for snow because the land where Inuits live is covered by snow for long time and it snows a lot there. Language has its feature based on the environment in which it is used.

'one on the right' not right one, (un)polished rice, whole grain, glass noodle, traditional steamed sausage(soondae. haha).

Then we tried 'transliterate' not translation.  궁중떡볶이-> Gungjungddeokbokgi. 돼지국밥->Dwaejigukbab not 'soup with pork and rice'.

I think we don't have to translate name of Korean food. It sounds awkward often.

And other speaking activity using Korean food. Rating Korean Rice Dishes Survey Sheet.

Pedagogical English Instruction. Preparing for presentation. I am getting nervous now.
meaningful input, language focus, meaningful output, fluency.
well, I tend not to have interest in students' output in class that much. I don't want to make them worried and nervous about making some output. I think when it is the time, they can speak and write with little help. My job is guiding and giving some good resource and tips.

Teaching Culture in the English Classroom.
I know there is few people reading this post all. If you read this part, Keep this secret, please.:) This is my individual opinion and because this blog is mine, I write this. Just keep this mine not others'.
Teacher Rob must have some bad impression or bad experience about rice. He always emphasizes we shouldn't eat rice at lunch because it is carbohydrate which makes people sleepy. I don't agree with his opinion although some part may be right. I saw some foreigners blame rice for getting weight or not being healthy. They say that rice is one of white food which cause obesity and has low nutrient. However, flour which is made of wheat has more calories comparing with same amount of rice and it changes into sugar faster than rice does once it goes inside body. Moreover, Korean diet always has rice. We have eaten rice for more than hundreds years. If someone dozes, that is because he or she has lunch too much and there is no room for brain working for study except for digestion.
In a nutshell, frankly speaking, I was upset. It may be a kidding for kind of ice-breaking, but still somewhat it was irritating. Although I said it is part of Korean culture, he said we should not eat rice. Then, what should we eat? Only meat and vegetables? I am NOT a westerner. Sandwich? It has also carbohydrate a lot! To make my brain function well, I need carbohydrate a little. Without it, our body cannot make enough energy to move.

Argument = claim + premise
claim: true or false, a declarative statement or conclusion, a fact, wish, intent, feeling or value.
premises: proof, reason,

I know that I am childish to react like this. If someone tell me joke, I should take it as joke.
I should.

Again, Speaking and Interactive Communication with Noel. We talked about dictogloss first. It was kind of review what I studied several years ago.
dictation: teacher talks slowly, students write down as soon as they listen, and it is individual work focusing on accuracy.
dictogloss: teacher talks normal speed, students first just listen and try write down at the second reading, in group which focusing on grammar but not 100% of accuracy.

I like Abril Lavigne and her songs. I'm with you. My students of their teens may love this song.

I heard the rain season ended but it is raining a lot. I should go out and jog... but not today.:-(

3 Plus 3 Teacher Training Program: Week 2

by ESLWRITER on AUGUST 1, 2013
Here are some notes for the 3+3 Teacher Training Class, week 2.

ACCESSING AND ANALYZING DATA

Today’s first exercise is about accessing and analyzing information. You and your partner will look at a large amount of data. Your task is to:
  1. find the differences (when looking at large amounts of data, the differences are important)
  2. develop hypotheses to understand the patterns of change (what’s happening)
  3. create a thesis sentence to explain these changes (why it’s happening)

ART OF FAILURE HOMEWORK

A possible summary paragraph for the reading homework Art of Failure.

SAMPLE SUMMARY PARAGRAPH

Understanding panic, choke and stereotype threats is important because it helps us find and possibly resolve the real reasons for failure. Panic is failure caused by a lack of thinking. Panic occurs when inexperienced people are in stressful situations and lose short term memory.
Choking is failure caused by too much thinking. In stressful situations that require mental or physical smoothness. By thinking too much, we perform below our abilities.
Stereotype threat is a kind of pressure. In situations where people’s actions confirm a negative aspect of a group, people tend to think too much to avoid failure.
Failure can also be traced back to the test environment if it reinforces stereotype threats, Consider, for example, the impact on a poor student if a math teacher says to the class, “I’m sure you already learned this in a math academy.”

POSSIBLE HYPOTHESES

  1. the greater the explicit thinking under pressure, the greater the chance for failure
  2. the more experience we have, the less likely we are to panic under pressure
  3. the more powerful the stereotype threat under pressure, the greater the chance for failure
  4. the more we second guess under pressure, the less we use our intuition
  5. sometimes the harder students work, the greater the chance for failure

Homework

Read Most Likely to Succeed, write a summary, write a thesis sentence, write 2 to 4 hypothesis sentences, write 5-10 comprehension questions.

Review on Monday, August 5th.

I am writing this after finishing review on Friday. Thanks, google blog to give me another chance to review what I've learned on Friday!!

Teaching Listening and Speaking

I got this from Jeff's google document.

Guess the Classmate Activities
Short Version:  Have students write a short list of words in a given time. (e.g. words that describe what you did last weekend).  The teacher then collects the papers, reads a few and students guess who they think wrote it. Longer Version:  Have students fill out a worksheet similar to the one below.  Make sure know students don’t write their names on the paper.  Collect all of the forms and have students pick one at a time (whole group or small group). Have students read the information and guess who is being described.
---------------------------

Comments, Ideas, & Extensions

It was interesting that one word can show a person. Color, their hobbies, clothing they like... We can figure out who filled the form. We do know each other more than we think.

In my class, I may use this activity when I have some time or at the last time of the semester. It will be fun.

Writing for communication
Okay. Today was tough day with this subject. The concept was rather vague and not concrete to grasp. Topic, focus, statement, (reason/effect), illustration(specific example), comment. We should keep asking Denis of the meaning and its use in the text. He gave us example writings, but it was rather strange to understand the concepts of those things. After some writing, I may get the notion.

CALL & Multimedia Instruction
I always wonder how Jeff gather these lots of site and materials. I like lots of things and... I should think about how to use those things. Also, he taught us how to use RSS. Next time, I want to know how to put RSS in my blog or other places.

Q: Where can I find the google document that you always put some words at the end of the class? I look for it and everyday I end up failing to find it out.

Practicum and Microteaching
We prepared for the presentation using the storyboard. I am little worried. Do we do alright?
