This is my savior

Caution: It includes very very personal opinion. Don't be upset with this. :)

Speaking and Interactive Communication
As usual, we read an article and talked about it in group. It was sport events, and Nora brought up with Son YeonJae, the Korean rhythmic gymnastic athlete. She said that the player may be overly evaluated thinking about other Korean athletes who won medals but are not popular, so can’t be supported financially. To be honest, I don’t like this kind of saying. She is she and others are others. She has done great work as a Korean national player in the field which had been almost barren. Now, she has got fortune and chances to grow up more, others blame her for getting too much popularity. Why can’t Koreans just cheer and back up someone who does their best and get good results? On the internet, they always underevaluate what the player did and accuse him or her for being greedy for money. The player deserve everything and they need money to practice more! Others are unlucky and we should support them. Can’t you think like this? There are lots of low self-esteem people and They only say negative things like Man-association built by Sung JaeGi. He insisted that men are counter-discriminated by Woman-family Ministry and society that is friendly only to women. So he made the Man-association and get some donation from men on the internet. Moreover, the leader tried doing suicide performance as for a protest, but he did died by mistakes during the performance. What an idiot he was, and what idiots Korean males they are, who follow him. Woman right is still much lower than man’s. If it seems that women may have more power in society only because there are super alpha girls on the top. There is still huge gap between man’s payment and woman’s even for those who get the same job at the same time. Of course women usually have lower payment. Women still have to drop off their job when they are pregnant and it is absolutely not easy to come back to what they did before after one or two years. Still, men in Korea are so conservative that they think house choir and baby care is woman’s job. The problem is, teenage boys follow him without thinking. How badly do they impact on the boys! When I found out the association and many men support his opinion, I was so disappointed with Korean male creatures. They don’t deserve the word ‘man’.
Hm... I was too upset.

Also, we talked about Korean education, especially ratio of students who go to University and their study. Ah....haha. I don’t want to mention anything about this. I don’t think Korean education, especially from the kindergarten to high school, is bad. It is private institutes and tutoring that is really bad, crazy. And, some professors take advantage of their position and take some bribe from graduates students.. I heard this a lot and I don’t want to go back to my university. If I should study more, I must choose other universities or go abroad!

Pedagogical English instruction
Denis taught us fluency activities and those were really fun! I think I can use some of them right into my class after I go back to school.
Speaking fluency. Talking about one thing repetitively for 4-3-2 minutes each. Originally students are given time to plan what to say, but Denis didn’t give us anything saying ‘believing our ability’. ...So, how was it, Denis? haha. For the second turn, I faced Denis and had to talked about the book I read. It was lucky that it was SECOND time to talk it because for the first round I stammered a lot. For third turn with 2 minutes, it was much easier.
Next one was ‘the girl effect’. We must repeat after the words in the movie clip. The teacher can speed up or down. We read it three times, speeding up each time. I like the content, so I downloaded it.
Flash card activity also has time pressure. When the one person pulls cards the other one should name them. They can name/make phrases(I pick dog, or ‘orange lion’)/ or sentences.
He said that Role-playing, Telling jokes, Idioms/proverbs/analogies can be fluency activities, but I don’t know how they do exactly.

Anyway, I loved the listening fluency activity with “Witch Doctor.” It is a really fun and funny song. Denis, can I have the files? I want to sing it with my students. haha. Seriously!

Teaching Culture in the English Classroom
Clear communication. To do communicate clearly, you need visual input and feedback. And also you should know how to question to get information (the quality of questions).
We did three activities: following teacher’s instruction and do origami, one student reading story and the other asking questions to find out detailed information, and information gap activity of drawing.

Speaking and Interactive Communication
We did another dictowatch. We first, watched video clip and guessed the gist. Then we watched it again taking notes to construct the content ourselves. Lastly, we did filling the gaps. It was a so good movie clip, but she spoke so fast. I should watch those clips in TED after I come back from the USA.
However, the content was really good. Daphne Koller did amazing thing: Coursera. With the website, I can take some classes from very good professors in universities. It could be better than TED! I even get some certificates after taking certain courses.
As soon as I came back home, I looked through two sites. A little disappointed, it is not like having every subject for learning. However, there are some routes that I can use for my learning on the internet, and I am happy with the facts. As time goes by, I want more and more.

These are about the universities ranked within 100 top in the world.

Writing for Communication
I like writing although it is very different from diary. Very different. I like writing although Denis pointed out some mistakes and he ignored many other mistakes.. haha.
Really, I really like writing. When I was in high school, the time I was busy studying, I kept my diary almost everyday. It took, of course, more than half an hour, but it was one of ways for releasing my stress for study and my tough and hard life. Well, I can’t read them well because it is so embarrassing to read those emotions again.
Anyway, we talked about how to write introduction of an essay. There are some ways to do this, although, Denis didn’t like this much.
Move from general to specific
Use an anecdote
Use a quotation
Ask a question
Present facts and statistics

Why did I feel that tired this morning? I was a little embarrassed that Denis mentioned me for being tired.

CALL & Teaching listening and Speaking
Social Network Service.... that was the word coined in Korea? Really? I thought it was invented by English speakers. We explored some sites and had time to think whether the sites would be useful to each other.
As a teacher, I often feel that I am overwhelmed by massive information. Finding good information is important. However what is more is processing the information suitable to my class. It is just raw material before I precess it. The problem is, there are already too many things not only in offline but also on the internet. Too often it takes too much time screen some good materials.
We also had time to think about activities that we will do demonstration on Thursday.............................. Ah.... I almost, no, totally forgot this till now. Some teachers definitely complained about this(Well, I felt like doing, too) and... Jeff made me some opponents by saying what I wrote on my blog. JEFF!!!! )-; Now, my life is on a very thin thread and I’m sure there are some enemies around me..... lol.

Practicum and Microteaching
Superlative. It has its accent on the second syllable. So, it must be pronounced like suPERlative. idiot I am. -_-
I did demonstration for this time, and with other teacher’s help, I finished it well. Well.... I think. It wasn’t that bad, is it? And Dr.Schwab (As I mentioned, everyone calls him Dr.Schwab, not Bob. He is the exception among the faculties.) gave us some advice. My team’s work would have been better if we had considered the adjective set, like short-tall, big-small. It could be also a good way to teach antonyms. Also he suggested us that we should get students to write/create the rule themselves. I gave them some examples using myself as a precious guinea pig and highlighted some important parts of the sentences. Then, I may lead them to suggest the rule and make it into a sentence. That is the inductive way. I usually try this way but without the last part-making rules by themselves. Okay, I’ll try later.
Other teachers also did really well, fantastic. Their experience as a teacher, I can’t catch up with in a few years. I should try harder.
Today, it was little hard to follow his explanation. Especially when he commented on Nora’s demonstration. I should practice and focus on listening more.

Review on Friday, August 23rd.

Finally it is Friday! I’ve been looking forward to see my friends after class. haha.

Content-based Instruction-logic&Language
Dr.Schwab explained something very interesting-brain. I’ve never thought or studied brain that throughly. Although I dozed at some points, it was very very interesting and it made sense that there is special time to learn languages. From birth to 6, children learn language in holistic way which allows children authentic way of pronounce and think in the language, which adults never attain. Whatever the language is, once children learn a language, it could be the base for learning other languages. Without it, human never learn any languages anymore.

Classroom English
Imperative - inquisitives questions are important!
I thought I used to use “Can/May I ask you...” “Could you do me a favor...” “Do you have some time?” before I asked something to my co-teachers. They said I talked sometimes too politely. It could be and that’s better, because I don’t know the certain degree of politeness and casualness. So, I chose to be polite rather than to be rude. Isn’t it right?
However, using English sometimes makes me feel strange. Although there is certain form of politeness, it is much freer to talk with foreign teachers than Korean teachers. When I use English, I often forget ages and I find out myself talk freely with them. Language doesn’t decide everything, but it SURELY influence people’s way of thinking, I think.

Afternoon, we prepared our demonstration class. Some teachers asked Dr.Schwab more time to prepare, but the other teachers and I thought this two hours and another one hour on Monday is much enough for 10 minute-maximum show. I want to have more chances to do. The more, the better.

Review on Thursday, August 22nd.

When I came home, someone rang the bell. I asked who he is, he didn’t answer. What? I looked though the eyehole, there was a man wearing shirt with white envelops in his hand. I opened the door and asked him again, then he finally answered that he was a kind of paperman. He recommended me to subscribe the paper, but I was about to say no. However, he looked at me again and said, “You are a student! Then you can’t do it, right?” I just said yes, and he went away. Good. Someone still regard me as a student and I can pretend that I have no right to do anything. No bothering and happy. kkk

Teaching Listening and Speaking
Should check Jeff’s blog.
As usual, we started with ‘small talk’. We stood in line and talked to each other. Usually my partners and I talked about rainy days. I don’t like rainy days that much except that I can stay inside a cafe and enjoy coffee and books. It rained a lot in the morning for about 10 minutes, and that’s why, I assumed, Jeff chose the topic.
We did ‘Conditional Chain’ in pair. We were got a sentence like ‘If I hadn’t become a teacher...’ then, the first one should complete the sentence such as “If I hadn’t become a teacher, I would be a singer.” The second one makes the sentence using the sentence the former completed like “If I were a singer....” After some time, the teacher stops students talking and ask them what was the last sentence.

Mine was, “If I got expelled by the British government, I would come back home and start working again.” Hahaha.

one of the today’s topic was ‘Logic Puzzle’. Puzzle. hm... I’m not a big fan of puzzle. However, it was not that hard. So, it was okay. It could be a small activity when I have 5 minutes after finish the class.

The other was ‘Expanding Sentences’. It could make students practice listening and speaking/writing checking grammar. It would be better to be done in group to have diversity and give each student some time to think. It could be rather diffecult because students must know the part of speech for each word and how to consist of sentence. I may put some limit by giving some words before.

Jeff said Expanding story would be more challenging, but if students have little knowledge of grammar, making story may give them a little more room for making something freely.

ex) Noel is an Australian.
Noel who is a hilarious is an Australian and huge fun guy who enjoys sarcasm. kkkkkk

And... Group Shout. 이구동성. This must be fun and useful for review of important sentences!

Anyway, what is activities exactly? I forgot...

LGBT, Gay&Straight, transvertite, transsexual, transgender 차이 비교

One thing which was really fun.
We did a dictation with sitcom “Friends”. First, we guessed what they were saying after watching the part without sound and then we checked it. Anyway It shows different way to talk between man and woman. kkk

Learning something new is exciting although I am not that rational person. Sometimes this kind of thinking and reasoning make me uncomfortable because it could be very inhumane. However, still, if I want to be persuasive, I must like reasoning rationally.

We analyzed text about fast food like hamburgers or fries. Now, I am hungry. I like French fries a lot!

4000 Essential English Words.
Whenever I open it, I feel how far/much I stand behind from the GOOD ability of using English. I should study more.
Anyway, “Call My Bluff” was a fun game. Also, Bruce is always fun. He makes everyone laugh. I think he has very good character.

Pedagogical English Instruction
He checked my video before, so I was able to spend the time as I wanted. I just do my work. I hope other teachers do their job in time so that we don’t have to take more extra time to do some work. I come here to study, not to play or take ‘healing’ time.

Review on Tuesday, August 20th.

To be honest, I don’t remember much on this day. In the very late night in which I usually start to write review, something I don’t want to recall again happened, and it has just gone.
The funny thing is that it blew up two days totally. I should learn how to control myself and get inner peace.

Speaking and Interactive Communication
I like debating although it could end up with arguments. With proper help, it could be interesting enough. It is good chances to get opinions from others on certain controversial topics. Also it is good opportunities to practice expand my opinion without being aggressive. Being aggressive is really big deal for me. I should practice and learn how to control myself during debating. haha.
Anyway, we talked about this and that.... and I am curious a lot. I heard that the former teachers who took this course already ALSO complained about the textbook we are using for this class. And Brad always tells that the book is biased much and much. Then, why does he use this book again? Many times it becomes itself controversial so much. I may not notice unreasonable things because I am a Korean, but I don’t think this book presents the right image of Korea.
I like his way to speak. haha. It sounds pretty neat, because I think his way to pronounce is much similar the thing I am used to. However, well, the book always gives us something that we can talk about because of its prejudice.

Everybody has to be miserable.

hihi.-_- I didn't think that he is that old, because when I speak in English it is like that there is much lower barrier between older(than I am) people and I.

However, 1994, I was in only 3rd grade in elementary school. kk.

Writing: Having a job that requires a lot of travel

This is my third writing in the class "Writing for Communication"

Having a job that requires a lot of travel is beneficial for my life. First, I can go to lots of places with company money and save on my budget. Money is one of the biggest obstacles for travel. However, with this job, I can go other places and there is no need to worry about money for hotel or transportation like flight. What I have to do is just go there and work, and if I have extra time, I can go out and experience new culture even for short time. Second, although it is business trip, it could be a good chance to refresh and inspire myself. Staying in one place for long time can make people dull. No matter if it is trip inside country or outside, I’ll go to other places and face new things like culture, food, nature and people. Whatever they are, they can give you a now point of view and help you change your life. This job, in a long term, should be helpful for my future. Last, travel would help make my life simple by focusing on important things. Today, people tend to have too much stuff. Packing is a process that takes important things in the bag and dumps unimportant or extra things out. It could let me put priorities on the important things even in my life because I can figure out I don’t need too much things in my life through many times of packing. Then, I can focus on important things more and it will make my life better.

Could it be true? haha. This is only my guessing.

Review on Monday, August 19th.

Today, I was really upset for the internet. I posted it in briefly, so I don’t want to talk about it anymore. However, I must call the company and make it pay for this.

Writing for Communication
Honestly, I hadn’t had time for doing homework. I really wanted to finish my writing, but the books....... I should get them organized at some degree. Now, it is still messy but I have a little place to read some books and do my homework like this. Although I can get internet connected... Ahhhhhhhhk!!
I heard this curriculum would be so hard to catch up with, but... this is not as hard as I thought. Of course I have lots to do. This blog takes lots of time from me, and I have to do exercise at least 4 times a week. it takes less than 3 hours for short round trip everyday. I still have lots of material to read(I haven’t read some of them yet. Crazy!). However, teachers gave us lots of time to prepare demonstration and writing. Sometimes it is little weird and I wonder why they give us this much time, because if I were one of them, I would give the trainees much less time. They may give us just one hour preparation time and make us prepare our lesson at home. Or, they can make us do one hour preparation and present right after. Teachers seem to be so considerate that I can enjoy this program. I am lucky to learn something new here, now. As time goes by, I really want to learn more even after this class. I am now seriously thinking about going abroad to study more in UK or Canada. Can I make it? Can I survive there? Some people who have known me for long time told me I could do anything that I want and I would succeed. I really want to do.

Teaching Listening and Speaking
Category games. A phone became a bomb. It was really fun way to use the phone in the class. This can give tension to students and make them focus on the work. I think this game is useful for review. Each lesson has a topic and I can teach them some vocabulary for several hours or even only one hour. After that, it will give me a good way to check my students’ memory. Scattergories looks much more difficult than simply explaining some words in a certain category. Students must know lots of vocabulary and can bring them out of their heads. However what if I let them use their phone to look up some words on the internet? it may work even in class with intermediate level.

CALL & Multimedia Instruction
As usual, Jeff introduced us some new helpful websites and let us surf the internet as we wanted. It was interesting to see some website where people willing to share their work and knowledge. This must be how people make life and world better. I want to join the group someday.
Prezi looks interesting but I couldn’t make one presentation. Now, I found out how hard Danny worked to learn this. He is so incredibly good. I will miss him after he leaves the school.

At lunch, I had just a small amount of instant spaghetti. If I have lots for lunch, I must fall asleep in the afternoon. So, I try to have light lunch for my afternoon classes. Alas. I fell asleep again. The coordinator explained us about I-20 visa, and almost last time I fell asleep. It is really hard to sit still after lunch. Everyday I realize that I should give my students more activities to make them participate in the class.

It takes about 40 minutes to write this journal(?), and I am going to write another ones for last Wednesday and Friday. Do work in time or you must pay for that later even more... I think.

Review on Friday, August 16th

Content-based Instruction-logic&Language
Today is sandwich day. Dr.Schwab mentioned dictowatch which we did last Wednesday with Brad. I thought Dr.Schwab said we can call him Bob, but all of us call him Dr.Schwab. I don’t know why. He is the only man we call with sir name.
Today’s topic was writing. It is a good way to notice the gap and for grammar understanding.
TOEIC shows us well about a graded method for providing students with writing tasks. It stars with small things and then goes to more complicated writing.
1) Start with sentence and paragraph construction.
2) simple essay: manage simple paragraph.
3) context: academic writing.
He mentioned ‘fishing rod’ but I can’t remember what it was. Already 4 days past.

To give students a task like 1), it would be okay to let students make pairs or groups of three. If there are more people, someone must be left alone. In pair or group, students can do social discussion. The teacher should give them short writing because with a long passage, students would focus on content, not the language. By describing the picture, students can manage small pieces. In other words, they need to write basic sentences first. It could be a good practice.

It may be done every class. Give just five minutes a day. Give students a picture and two or three words(not more than three). Students could make a sentence with them. The given words should create some context like words in story board. They act like a trigger.

We have to build student’s basic skills and maintain them on a regular basis. That’s why we should provide them with everyday writing work and teach them from foundation.

Korean students are VISUAL learners. Use their strong point: give them visual things/material like photos.

On the other side of strong at visual materials, we are weak at auditory stimulus. That’s why we turn up the volume when we try to look at and listen to something at the same time. By turning up the volume, we can help our brains pay attention to the thing.

Can, CAN’T. They are hard to differentiate. I usually guess them from the context.

Reading and Fluency Activities
the Rock of Gibraltar
Noel told me that expression when I hold up the book he gave us before. I found it a little embarrassing when I act like a model student. I often think myself a nerd because many people call me like that although I don’t study that much and I am (I think) social with some friends. I feel embarrassed and upset as many times as I am proud of myself. Anyway, I like the expression. One day, I saw an old couple walking along the steam holding each other’s hand. It was so warm and happy, heartful scene. Although I’ve seen lots of bad things for my entire life, so, I must have learned some of them, but I want to meet someone reliable, someone who I can walk together like them. They must be the Rock of Gibraltar to each other.

Were you born in the barn? Noel said this to a teacher who left door open. lol

He talked about reading fluency. To increase reading fluency, we should have 1) shorter fixations, 2) appropriate jumps, and 3) less regressions. Then, we practiced to just read some paragraphs without understanding, the eye movement only(timed Repeated Reading). At third time, I recorded almost 500 words per a minute. I must have done something wrong. I should find out right way to do this.
I think this practice should be very useful for me because I have a habit that I tend to say each word inside of my head when I read something. Whatever it is, I do. It sometimes gives lots of fun because I can imagine some scenes very vividly, but it is not helpful when I read some persuasive writing or explanation.

- We learn some strategies and practice them consciously, but after a lot of practice, it becomes skills and we can do them automatically without thinking.

US Education System & Overseas Preparation
We pretended a secretary of an important person like Ban Gimoon or the CEO of Jeffco(lol. It went bankrupt after minutes) and had to take down some note as he ordered to me. My partner and I took turns and it was so hard, because it required us the sheer listening skill when nonverbal actions are not allowed. However, the content it has was real, everything.
We practiced minimal pairs.... and difficult. Tense and lax vowels! Stops and fricatives and what...... I feel jealous for the children who can fly overseas and learn English from their early time.

Writing for Communication
Writing, writing, writing.... Today, Denis gave me back my work for it was too general. I thought it was okay if I could give valid reasons even the topic was general. However, he was not content with my work. He said mine has a too general topic for a paragraph, and I should follow the ruld of T(F)-R-I-C. Topic, focus, and three reasons/illustrations/comments for habit formation! ah....

I tried this on the Gliffy.
It game me a trial version which I can use almost every functions except print or save.
It is a convenient web site. I like it.

I hope I will met a nice and kind family who are willing to give me help and work with nice teachers in the school. I hope I can make good relationship with the family and teachers there.

I like here, too! It looks so cute!

Upset

I used to know upset as angry. I was taught like that.
Now, I know a little bit more. It could mean angry, confused, disoriented, etc.
I am upset. I have been upset during the whole night. I couldn't focus on my work and couldn't sleep either.

Today, it must be a tough day.

Really mad.

I cannot get the internet connected in my home today!
An IDIOT salesman lied to me that the internet speed is about 100mb/s and it would cost me about 13,000won per month. So, I ended the contract with KT even though it suggested me the price of about 15,000won. Today when the engineer set the internet, it was less than 85. Are you kidding me now? He said I asked the lower version which I didn't. I complained this to the salesman but he said he told me that the speed is not fully 100, less than 100 but it is quite well. What a liar he is!!!

Still working on it

The engineer came and is working on the internet.
My home is still messy. My room is even worse. I am still working on it.

My books

Too many book.
It took my whole weekend.

Speaking and Interactive Communication
We talked about emigration from South Korea to South-East Asia and Learning English in Korea. Those were interesting topics but also a little irritating topic, especially latter one.
Interesting word: brain-drain.

In the afternoon, we did dictogloss. Brad's dictogloss is different from what I've learned. Usually it is done like a teacher reading and students writing with friends. Today, the way that it was done was interesting. First, I saw a movie clip and describe a half part to a partner and I dictated it to her. She had to write down some key points then later those can help me remind the content of video clip. After my part, she would do the last half as I did, and I would what she had done. Then we checked the content together and should make identical 2 writings(we should write each) which explained the movie clip. We were not allowed to see each other's.

This required us to describe a situation which is changing constantly, make speech, take note of key points, reconstruct a text at the same time!

It was little tough and I don't think I did enough, but I managed to do. It was not good compared to Brad's explanation, though. Well, he is a native speaker....... I must try harder!

dictogloss : noticing the gap, negotiation of meaning of form, lexico-grammar.

When do we teach vocabulary?
If we want to teach a text fast and in smooth way, PRE teaching.
If we want students REMEMBER the vocab, POST teaching. (ambiguity tolerance, notice the gap)

Babies can recognize the difference of the languages from their 8-month old.
10 month........ what? I forgot.;;
Maybe they would focus on the language which their mothers use.
If you want to raise your kids as fluent bilingual, you should teach them before 7, international age.

Damn.

What is difference between stocking and sock? I forgot....

Pedagogical English Instruction
I slept last night pretty much... about 6 hours, and I have no idea why I was so sleepy that time, the fourth period, usually when I feel real hunger. I just guess now that the braces that I got adapted yesterday made me too tired. I was a bit tired and felt cold even with the AC temperature 26. Usually I am the one who feel hot easily like boys... not that much, but among teachers in the room I'm the one who feel hot too much. There are some characters for body. My body is said to have lots of heat inside, so I cannot eat ginseng. Once, my mom boiled ginseng and gave the water to me as a kind of medicine or tea. I drank it two time a day for two days and I felt sick for three days and couldn't go out. I was in bed all day long. Ginseng is said to give heat to body, so lots of people have it to be healthy but it could be poison to people like me.

We talked some vocabulary about Meta Language. I should look up the books I used to read to check up some words.
Haram has really good speech skills. I felt jealous for her.

Ah.... It is a shame that I dozed that time. T_T

I don't know what part of this class is related to teaching culture in the English Classroom. However, it is interesting to learn some logical thinking although it is so hard to get used to it! I had never imagined that thinking logically is THIS DIFFICULT.
We learned/reviewed some fallacies again. A fallacy means a premise that can't support claim.
There are several kinds of fallacy.
Ad Hominen : attack the person, not the issue
Tu Quoque : you're a hypocrite. Someone's saying is not consistent with his/her behavior and you blame for it, although the claim is right.
Bandwagon : everybody's doing it, so should you.
Straw Man : exaggerated claim.
Red Herring : irrelevant topic.
Beg the Question : the premise is the claim, circular argument.
When I got this information first, it was so confused, but now I got it a little.

My workout record

This is not today but some part of yesterday's record.

Michelle said we may buy this tea at starbucks.

Review on Monday, August 12th. Hot days...

These days, it has been so hot. I had never been woken up for being hot. This year, I've woken up several times already.
Today is the first that I write review as soon as I came home. It is 6:05 p.m. Wow!

Writing for communication
Writing a paragraph. I did homework already last week. So there was nothing to do. I just read the text book and tried some writing. It is really good to do something early not wait till the last time.

Teaching Listening and Speaking
CALL & Multimedia Instruction
It is Jeff's blog and you can find all(?) theoretical explanation here.
(I didn't realize that the material(ppt) could be this much!)
Mobile dictation. That was interesting but also a tough task. I should dictate what friend said through kakaotalk(voicetalk), it is hard to understand without no nonverbal signal and there was time gap between someone talking and interlocutor getting, about 3 seconds. Anyway, the smartphone would be a good tool in class if we can use it properly. It is good chance to do pure listening tasks or do some speed quiz using chat room. However, you know this?

In the classroom of 19th century, the teacher of 20th century teaches students of 21th century.

Practicum and Microteaching
Dr.Schwab, I am really sorry. For NOT to feel doze again in your class, I have lunch just a little, a bread and a pack of yogurt. However, even those amount was too much for this hot and tiring weather. I tried to focus on your class so hard, but I found out myself dozing and dozing... drinking coffee. T_T  I could focus on your second period, and now I know how important to give students some simple comprehension questions to help them understanding the text.
I should read the paper you gave to me, and study by myself, and if any questions, I will go to you tomorrow. T_T

Do you have any blog or email address? Then it might be helpful for me to review what I've learned...

Review on Friday, August 9th.

Here, I again write this review on Sunday. -_-
What a lazy person I am...

Content-based Instruction-logic&Language
In any case, textbooks could be boring. No, they are boring, because we can predict the content and how a teacher will handle it. That's why we, teacher need some other material beyond the textbook. Contents from outside may give students some motivation.

Bilevel content.
Bi means two, so bilevel content means content which has two level of content. One is the original, authentic version, and the other one is simplified. Simplified means the content doesn't have extra, meaningless things such as name of people, street, etc. Students can start with simplified version and then they can move to the original version.

Authentic material can be very difficult for learners, because the content is for native people who really use the language in their life. The real life language can be overloaded. So, simplified material can lower the inhibition and anxiety caused by meaningless names or conjunctions, which help students comprehend the text much more, like showing doubled comprehension level at first listening.

By taking out some unimportant things from the text, the material can help do scaffold learning.

It is culturally connected to today and language.

And second period, we watched a video about teaching grammar. I tried to focus on it, but someone set the temperature of AC as 27. It was too hot to do something inside. There was no difference between outside and inside. I became very hot and lost some concentration. I should check the video again. Ah...

Classroom English
We talked about how to make students engaged
1) Focus on meaning(fluency), not accuracy(form)
2) Think about your own knowledge set.
3) Question Hierarchy  a. Yes-No Q  b. Either/or A  c. Wh Q
: for a, b, you should play dumb (Never ask Q that you don't know As)

Noel knows term for games. It was interesting to see some jargon? and what it stands for.
I don't like games much. Usually I play game for sometime and quit. Playing games are somewhat bothering. I like watching movies, dramas, and reading books. Also I like to talk and write about them.

Practicum and Microteaching
In my group, Haram was supposed to present the activity, so I didn't have anything to do during she was editing something.
It was good to see someone's class. Although we should focus on fluency, we also don't forget the grammar. We should focus on at least one thing. Grammar can help students understand the material better.
Also, proper classroom English. I should learn some tips from Haram.

My books

Noel didn't believe that my room is total mess. So I put up this picture on.
These are my bookshelves filled with lots of comic books and books.
You should know that there are same amount of books behind the books front.
You can also find more than a hundred books on the floor...
I should throw some of them away.....

Happy to have a nice friend.

I have friends in the USA who was once a co-teacher in my school and her boyfriend. We became friends and took short trips together. I sometimes visited her house and we had lunch or dinner together.

Now she is trying to arrange my schedule in California. She looks for help from her or her boyfriends' friend and relatives there. I am sure I can meet them during the thanksgiving holidays and have nice time.

I miss them. They are so nice and sweet. I hope I can meet those kind people in California: my homestay family and colleagues there.

Review on Thursday, August 8th.

Bruce told me he also read my blog. Really? Seriously? I didn't know that someone except Jeff would read my blog. Now, I found out some teachers now read my blog. I should watch my tongue.. well, my fingers? haha.

These days my diet and sleeping time is so irregular. Wednesday, I ate only juice or snack, kind of. Blueberry and banana mix for morning, some snack at lunch(I was too tired to go out. I fell asleep), patbingsu for dinner. I was really curious the bingsu, so I tried and that was good. It was not too sweet so I like it. Today, (actually 5:05 morning on the Friday now) I did blood donation and fell asleep without any exercise. Then, I woke up around 1 a.m. and still awake watching some TV show on the computer. I must be out of mind.

Teaching Listening and Speaking.
We talked about four strands. Meaningful input, meaningful output, language focus, and fluency. I usually focus on input in my class, but I agree I should give students some chance to make output. Although there are few chances to speak or write English in Korea, give chance to do and encourage them to do could make them get used to producing English for someday.
Also we talked about the school rule in California. The name of school is mouthful so that I couldn't remember easily. Whatever, the rules are so specific and I doubt someone ever read these rules even once. I mean, students. Most of them never need to read those, don't they?

Teaching Culture in the English Classroom.
Okay. I should practice more to summarize text. It is really frustrating that my trial failed again and I even can't make half way to do. I may do right some part, but still so disappointed with my work. Text discourse is so different from one of Korean writing, which drives me crazy. I used to be good at Korean and not bad at writing in Korean. I think summarizing in English text needs some creativity. Rob said this text is for suggestion, but it showed large amount of result of observation and experiment. It gives us its opinion at the last and in small amount. I thought it is just small part that the writer added for kind of just in case. But THAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!
How come they are this so different!

Reading and Fluency Activities.
For two hours Noel did interviewed some teachers and I tried SSR. It was so hard to focus on the book because I slept for only 5 hours for two days except that I slept for an hour at the lunch time yesterday. Anyway, I started the book "About a boy" and I think I can enjoy this. I like the movie and I wanted to read the book also, but there was no chance to do. Even though this is the graded book, it will be interesting.
When can I finish Ann of Island?

Pedagogical English Instruction
I did demonstration class fist out of 6 teachers. As soon as I stood in frond of other teachers, I went blank. I totally forgot what to do. So, I skipped some part and I made some mistakes, too. Oh, my... What happened is What happened. I should just let it go. Next time, I should prepare some less. I think I prepare too much for just 5 or 10 minutes. The amount I prepared was actually for 20 minutes. What an idiot I was.
Denis checked my writing and he must have ignored my minor mistakes, because I found out some after he returned it and I was embarrassed. The result was not bad. Actually it was pretty good. I think it is because the topic was rather easy to write.

Time to go exercise and prepare to go to the class!
